Happy Sassy Beautiful tells the story of Kaija Koo's journey to become a confident and courageous artist. The film is a powerful story of one of Finland's greatest artists, whose music has comforted and empowered generations. Her pianist husband Markku sees her talent more clearly than anyone else. But success does not come without an internal struggle. The grief of losing her father stops Kaija in her tracks and makes her momentarily give up her dreams. When unexpected giant success propels Kaija to superstardom, she must not only face the shadows of success, but also find her own voice – so that she can get to the stage freer than ever.
"Before the shoot, we talked a lot with Oona Airola and Jari Virman about what it means to play a well-known, existing person. How can anyone play Kaija Koo, who is so inimitable? But already during the rehearsals, I felt strongly that there is something very beautiful when one tries to understand another person so deeply and precisely that one pretends for a moment to be that other person. A supporting actor is a supporter. Jari Virman talked about this in rehearsals, how he feels his role is to support Oona. During the filming, I witnessed how committed he was to fulfilling this role. In a way, the idea of being supportive permeated the whole team. Every detail of staging, costume design, make-up and filming had been planned and executed by someone, so that the wonderful story of Kaija Koo could come to life and ring so loudly that it could be felt down the spine", comments Selma Vilhunen.
The film is produced by Solar Films' Rimbo Salomaa, Anna Nuru, Markus Selin and Jukka Helle. The film is distributed by Nordisk Film.
