END OF THE LINE – THE WOMEN OF STANDING ROCK

End of the Line – The Women of Standing Rock tells the story of the Lakota Native American tribe's struggle to defend their land. The documentary was nominated for a News & Documentary Emmy 2022 in the Outstanding Social Issue Documentary category.

End of the Line – The Women of Standing Rock is about the women of the Lakota Native American tribe who risk their lives to stop the construction of the Dakota Access pipeline across their land on the Great Plains of the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota, USA. The pipeline will cut through sacred sites and cemeteries on the Standing Rock reservation and is feared to pollute the Missouri River, which runs through the area, and its surroundings.

End of the Line – The Women of Standing Rock is also a narrative of the systematic and structural oppression, economic and social inferiority and disparaging treatment that Native Americans have experienced and continue to experience.

The protests organized by indigenous peoples in spring 2016 crossed the news threshold around the world. Documentary filmmaker Shannon Kring was there at the beginning of the protests and filmed their progression to the point of forced displacement. The events in the documentary began when five members of the Standing Rock Sioux Nation set up a peaceful camp to protest the Dakota Access oil pipeline in April 2016. According to the Sioux, the pipeline is the black poisonous snake their ancestors warned about. The Lakota are a Sioux tribe.

The story of the women of the Lakota people and their struggle against the transnational oil giant and for their rights took centre stage instead of the protest reportage. The documentary is also a universal story of how indigenous peoples around the world continue to struggle for their right to clean water, land and their way of life.

The film was post-produced in Finland and its magical music was composed by Ville Tanttu and Neil Kring. The film was edited by Lesley Kubistal and Joona Louhivuori. The film is supported in Finland by Finnish Film Foundation, YLE and AVEK.
