VARES – THE SHERIFF, starring Antti Reini, will premiere on 7.1.2015.

Synopsis

Jussi Vares finds two bodies on the outskirts of Turku: a woman shot in the head and a man whose body is covered with cuts resembling runes, suggesting that the murder was part of an obscure ritual. A year later, Vares is hired to investigate these murders. The clues lead Vares towards the invisible godfather of Turku's underworld, The Sheriff. The Sheriff is a man no one knows or talks about. Vares finds himself dangerously close to "Panel", a secret underworld gentlemen's club for whom human life is a cheap commodity. As he investigates the case, Vares gets too close to the truth.

Director Hannu Salonen
Hannu Salonen was born in Finland in 1972. He has built an extensive international career and has directed a total of 26 feature films, most of them thrillers and dramas. Salonen began his film career in his youth by gathering a group of film buffs around him, with whom he made several amateur productions. After spending a year in the USA in the late 80s and graduating from Kallio High School, Salonen went on to study film directing at the Berlin Film Academy. His diploma thesis and first feature film Downhill City won, among others, the Best European First Feature Award in France.

Salonen's artistic work focuses on feature films and he has worked on international productions around the world in recent years. He has also directed several shorter films of 45 and 60 minutes, as well as a few series. He has directed, for example, the Crossing Lines series, starring Donald Sutherland as one of the main characters. In Finland, Salonen has been seen in a few episodes of Criminalist and the films Borowski's Tango and Stolen Baby. He has also been seen in Finland in a refugee drama set on Hiddensee Island in the Baltic Sea, called "Spur der Hoffnung" (A trace of hope).

Salonen's next feature film, Vares – The Sheriff, produced by Solar Films, will premiere on 7 January 2015. The father of two lives with his family in Bodensee, southern Germany.
