Vares – The path of the righteous men

The death of a young woman takes Vares to Ostrobothnia. Common sense is no match with the strange people and events in the village of Kahdenvirranmaankylä. You need luck.

Synopsis

The body of a young woman has been found in a cemetery in Ostrobothnia. The finder, Pastor Hukkanen (Markku Maalismaa), hires Jussi Vares (Antti Reini) to investigate the crime.

And so begins the strangest incident of Vares' career. Vares travels to the village of Kahdenvirranmaa, a small, run-down hamlet in the grip of a strong sectarian religion. The village seems to be full of strange characters. Wherever Vares goes, things get stranger and stranger. The records of the local mental hospital hide dark secrets; the hospital's head doctor seems to have half the village as his patient.

Village idiot Paskamantteli (Aake Kalliala), café owner Peitsara (Tomi Salmela) and drunken pastor Hukkanen are clearly on the side of Vares, who is pretending to be a journalist, but the others seem to be very suspicious of the stranger. The men in the village have a lot at stake and a lot to hide.

The librarian wife (Merja Larivaara) of the sectarian director (Peter Franzén) is sympathetic to Vares, but the same cannot be said of the chief doctor (Kari-Pekka Toivonen) or Officer Larva (Petteri Summanen).
