Summertime

Relationships and champagne are bubbling in summer in Hanko.

What happens when friends from completely different backgrounds end up working in Hanko for the summer? Summer parties, love, conflict, emotional storms, disappointments and spiritual growth, deepening friendships, learning right from wrong and a little growing up. It's a summery portrayal of 25-year-olds on the cusp of making decisions, when the future is scary and you just want to have fun.

Synopsis

Iiris, 25, who has worked abroad as a waitress for years, is returning to Finland for the summer because her best friend Karoliina, 25, has gotten them both summer jobs at a café in Hanko. The plan is to spend another carefree summer with the best friend, partying and enjoying the beach life, without the stress of having to "go somewhere" or look good on their CVs. When the girls make friends with their slightly eccentric co-worker, Eeva, 25, and take up residence in her aunt's beach house, the stage is set for the perfect summer.

However, Iiris's crisis of growing up and finding her ways, Karoliina's infatuation in a married man, and Eeva's faltering attempts to study for the exams once again make it difficult to maintain complete nonchalance. Iiris is anxious to return to Spain, but if she were to stay in Finland in the autumn, she would have to figure out what she wants to do with her life. Meeting the all-too-lovely Jussi, 25, does nothing to ease her autumn panic. To make matters worse, her older sister, Hertta, has dared to have a baby. It seems that everyone but Iiris is moving on with their lives. Karoliina, almost a double master, is tempted for the first time in her life to act deliberately and morally wrong. Eeva, struggling with her learning difficulties, is beginning to suspect she is a bit of a fool.

All three women have to accept difficult things about themselves and their lives during the summer, and admitting these things to a close friend is not easy. Luckily, it's a hot summer, they're not quite in their thirties yet, and there are comrades in arms who will stand by until the end. Summertime is a film about growing up, friendship and, even in the face of adversity, "maybe the best summer ever".
