Vares – The Girls of April

April is the cruelest of the months. Journalist Ruuhio hires private investigator Jussi Vares to do a story on a 15-year-old mystery.

Synopsis

Three young student girls have disappeared in Turku one after the other in April fifteen years ago. Journalist Ruuhio hires private detective Jussi Vares to write a story about the mystery, which has reached mythical proportions. Vares intends to let himself off the hook, but gradually the case takes its toll. Aino Aaltonen, Teresa Sundin and Kikka Valasranta turn from old photographs into real people and demand to solve the case.

The cold killer returns with a vengeance

Turku is proving to be a very dangerous place. World traveller Tristan Leopoldo da Cunha arrives back in his hometown. He is on the move with a vengeance, ready to wipe out anyone in his path to settle scores with his past. Tristan will kill in cold blood to further with his plan. Even Vares has a vigilante on his tail. An abandoned ex-girlfriend has hired two petty criminals to teach Vares a lesson. Fortunately, Gianfranco and Karvanoppa are nowhere near as dangerous as Tristan, and with the help of his acquaintance Antidote, Vares even befriends the sympathetic rogues.

Sirkku can be found at the erotomaniacs' meeting

Well-meaning friends are also a handful at the Apteekki Bar. Luusalmi and Alanen drag Vares to a meeting of erotomaniacs, expecting to find easy bedfellows there. Vares meets the interesting Sirkku, who works as a political assistant to the well-known member of parliament, Anne Airismaa. A cat-and-mouse game ensues between Sirkku and Vares, with Vares' bedroom being an impulsive interlude.

Jesus the cat helps in investigation

Vares' best friend is a cat, which he baptizes Jesus with the help of his neighbour Gunnar. As the investigation progresses and Vares gathers bits of information here and there. Many connections come to light, many of them linked to the company director Kurt Metto. Things begin to unravel when Jesus escapes up the stairs and hides at Gunnar's attic.

From there begins a frantic race, with bodies being created as the pieces of the puzzle fall into place – or do they?
