Synopsis
Kamal Hussein is a 17-year-old immigrant boy born in Helsinki. He lives in Mellunmäki with his mother and stepfather. Kamal does not like his stepfather, who tries to take too much of a fatherly role in his life. Kamal's father has moved to Nairobi years ago, where Kamal dreams of moving.
Old and grumpy Veikko meets Kamal in the stairwell by chance. Veikko wants to go to a summer cottage for Midsummer, Kamal to his father's place in Nairobi. Veikko thinks Kamal is an adult and promises to pay him well for a car ride to the cottage. The journey together begins immediately.
Kamal has the money and passport for the trip to Nairobi, but first he has to take Veikko to the cottage. Kamal and Veikko, who start off by teasing each other, gradually get to know each other and discover surprising similarities. Kamal ends up trying to sort out the beef between Veikko and his son. Finally, Kamal has to reflect on his own family and decide whether he wants to leave Finland after all.
Unexpected journey is the third feature-length film by writer-director Samuli Valkama. His previous films include Love and other troubles and the award-winning No Thanks, for which Anu Sinisalo received the Jussi Award for her leading role. The film also stars Mikko Nousiainen and Saga Sarkola in prominent roles.
