In his youth, the author Frej has already found in Stella Rabell, an upper-class girl, a deep connection and passion that lasts between them through the decades. When Stella's older brother Alex is stabbed, Frej becomes engrossed in reminiscing about the events of past decades. Frej's memories from the bright 1970s to the present day are filled with love, jealousy, betrayal, life and death. The friends' lives are followed from youth to middle age – the world changes and they change with it.
