Restless 3 / Addiction
When nothing is enough... The third film in the trilogy is about a woman's sex addiction.
The story of Restless 3 (Addiction) dates back to 2000, when Aku Louhimies' debut film Restless premiered. Producer Markus Selin realized that it was possible to successfully make several different films about the love lives of young adults. He decided to produce two more films on the same subject every two years. At the same time, he named the series The Restless Trilogy.
The second film in the trilogy was Lenka Hellstedt's Me and Morrison (2002), named after the novel by Kata Kärkkäinen on which the film is based. Director Minna Virtanen initially developed the theme for Restless 3 (Addiction) herself. She then commissioned a short story on the subject from author Leena Lehtolainen. Based on this and Minna Virtanen's ideas, the final script was written in English by British screenwriter Lara Moon. The thirteenth version was finally adapted into Finnish by Veli-Pekka Hänninen.
The film's bold interpretation of the story was far from being made out of thin air. Virtanen and Moon noticed that a lot had been written and published about sex addiction. Reading the books, they realized that it was a trendy disease that was not much talked about outside therapists' rooms. Moon worked on the script right up to the shooting period and Virtanen, with the help of a sex therapist, sought out some building material for the lead actor. The original English-language script was called Addiction, but the producer was reluctant to give up the word 'restless', which had become a household word. So in Finland the film was called Restless 3 – when nothing is enough.
The film premiered on 16 January 2004 to huge advance publicity.
Synopsis
Thrill-seeking leads to destructive addiction.
The main character Jonna (Mi Grönlund) is a mother, a wife, a sister, a career woman – everything many people can only dream of. Her life seems perfect: a husband, two adorable children and a glamorously rising career in an advertising agency run by Herman (Jukka Puotila).
But Jonna is looking for more content in the midst of everyday routines. Time and place don't matter when she picks up a man like any other. After the act, she can walk away without exchanging a word with the other party. As the number of men increases, affairs become an uncontrollable obsession that leads downhill. Everyone around Jonna suffers as a result. Most of all, of course, her understanding first love and husband Niklas (Nicke Lignell), while into Jonna's world of lies enters Aleksi (Jasper Pääkkönen), a young and handsome sailor who also plays his own game with his own rules. Unfortunately for him, Jonna, who is hooked on Aleksi, is just one more name on a long list.
The love life of Jonna's artist sister Sanna (Saija Lentonen) is not simple either. Sanna is jealous of Jonna's success, although her genuine sisterly love shines through in both good and bad ways.
The only person that sees through Jonna is Nora (Amira Khalifa), a TV psychiatrist whom Jonna meets while planning an advertising campaign for her. Nora is a popular sex therapist who uses her own TV show to get people talking about their sexual problems. Nora tries to stop Jonna from ruining her life with a destructive addiction.
