Robin – The Movie
An ordinary boy in an unusual situation. Robin – The Movie tells the story of a talented teenage star's rapid rise to fame. The world premiere and Robin's giant concert at the Hartwall Arena on Saturday 1 December 2012 – the evening began with the film, followed by Robin's Supershow. Robin The Movie in cinemas on 5 December 2012.
The 82-minute film, produced by Solar Films, is directed by Inari Niemi and produced by Oskari Huttu, Jukka Helle and Markus Selin. Inari Niemi (b. 1978) has directed several short films and was an assistant director in Roskisprinssi, directed by his father Raimo O. Niemi.
Performed by a 13-year-old Robin Packalen (b. 24 August 1998), the debut single Frontside Ollie was released on 16 January and became the most downloaded song on iTunes in Finland within 24 hours. The rest, as they say, is history.
Robin The Movie is a film about an ordinary schoolboy in an extraordinary situation: a feature film, a book, two albums, four singles, four music videos and tens of wild gigs in the same year!
How does it feel to perform for a crowd of thousands of fans who know the words to every song? How does it feel to have girls screaming your name? Can you get used to the snapping mobile phone cameras and autograph seekers? How does it feel to do what you've always wanted to do?
The film follows Robin's sold-out summer tour and the busy making of a new album, in which Robin has increasingly become involved himself. He has recently become more interested in songwriting, and it seems that all sorts of great things are happening and new challenges are on the horizon.
Robin introduces the audience to a very humorous and brave teenage boy.
A charismatic and easy-going performer, Robin, has already become familiar to many, but the most interesting thing about the Robin phenomenon is what happens outside the performance or interview situation; how Robin is like when he is surrounded by people he knows, hidden from observers. The film shows what it's like to be the boy for whom all this happens.
"Although this is a phenomenon the likes of which has never been seen in Finland before, an even more interesting subject for the filmmaker was Robin himself. The documentary follows Robin's transition into adolescence and his influence on his own life and music in a whole new way," says director Inari Niemi.
According to Robin, making the film was really cool: "It's kind of funny to be the subject of a film, especially when I'm still so young, but it didn't always occur to me that we were making a film when the cameras were rolling at gigs anyway," says Robin.
Robin's debut album Koodi was released in February 2012 and sold triple platinum in a single day. In June, Robin became the youngest ever Finnish artist to break the magical barrier of 100 000 album sales.
Universal Music will release Robin's new album Chillaa on Friday 5 October. On the same day, tickets for "Robin Day" at the Hartwall Arena will go on sale at Lippupiste and the publishing company Tammi will publish a book called Robinin huikea tarina.
