The Shanghai International Film Festival is an A-listed event and ranks among the most prestigious festivals in the world, along with the Cannes and Berlin festivals. It is also the biggest festival in Asia, and will be now held for the 18th time. The premiere of The Midwife was in September 2015.

There were 2096 applicants to the main series, from 108 countries, which marks a new record for the festival. Out of those, 15 movies were selected to the main series.

The Midwife has been nominated in the following categories in the main competition series:
– An award for BEST FEATURE FILM
– JURY GRAND PRIX
– An award for BEST DIRECTOR
– An award for BEST SCREENPLAY
– An award for BEST ACTRESS
– An award for BEST ACTOR
– An award for BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
– An award for OUTSTANDING ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENT in the categories artistic directing, costume, editing, make-up etc.

Antti Jokinen comments: “A filmmaker often has unrealistic opinions of his own greatness; that is why the appreciation of others feels flattering. I am extremely pleased that the cast and crew of The Midwife get appreciation for their work. The production took three years and the film was made with manical meticulousness. And also, it makes me glad that the history of Finland draws universal interest.”

The main roles of The Midwife feature Krista Kosonen, Lauri Tilkanen, Tommi Korpela and Pirkka-Pekka Petelius. The supporting cast includes Elina Knihtilä, Leea Klemola, Seppo Pääkkönen and Johannes Brotherus.
The Midwife is based on the awarded novel of the same title by Katja Kettu, who has also written the screenplay with the director. The movie was shot last summer and fall in northern Norway, Lapland and Lithuania. The premiere was in September 2015. The movie was produced by Markus Selin and Jukka Helle and is distributed by Nordisk Film.
