The Home of Dark Butterflies chosen as Finnish Oscar entry
Dome Karukoski´s The Home of Dark Butterflies (Tummien perhosten koti, 2008) has been selected by Finland´s official selection committee as the Finnish submission for the Foreign Language Film Oscar.
The Home of Dark Butterflies has been produced by Markus Selin and Jukka Helle / Solar Films Inc. and written by Marko Leino, based on a novel by Leena Lander. The main cast includes Tommi Korpela, Niilo Syväoja, Eero Milonoff, Kristiina Halttu, Marjut Maristo, Kati Outinen, Pertti Sveholm and Matleena Kuusniemi.
Other main crew includes cinematographer Pini Hellstedt, editor Harri Ylönen, sound designer Jyrki Rahkonen, composer Panu Aaltio, set desginer Pirjo Rossi, costume designer Elina Kolehmainen and make-up designer Mari Vaalasranta.
The Home of Dark Butterflies premiered in Finland on January 11th, 2008, distributed by Nordisk Film Theatrical Distribution. Its international rights are handled by TrustNordisk.
Finland´s expert jury made its decision after watching the 16 Finnish films selectable this year: 8 Days to Premiere, Black Ice, The Border, Christmas Story, Dark Floors – The Lordi Motion Picture, The Home of Dark Butterflies, The Novelist, Playing Solo, Quest for a Heart, Ricky Rapper,Sisters Apart, Stormheart, The Subtenant, Tali-Ihantala 1944, Tears of Apriland Three in Love.
The jury described The Home of Dark Butterflies as a very credible and coherent film that clearly expresses wide mastery of cinematic narration. The touching story is told without haste but never loosing the intensity. Also the casting has been a success; the jury praised the fresh and realistic work of the young actors.
Oscar nominations will be announced on January 22, 2009. Oscar gala will be broadcasted live worldwide on February 22, 2009.
The Home of Dark Butterflies is also Finland´s nominee for the Nordic Council Film Prize 2008, to be announced on October 15th 2008.
